2020 – Books in review

The books that kept me company during the quarantine

Misc

| Posted December 21, 2020

I entered 2020 with, what felt like, a lofty goal of reading 10 books. While that won’t sound like a lot to some, it would be the most I had read in a year in my life. What I didn’t foresee when setting my goal was the impact of COVID-19 and the amount of time I would be at home. So, I surpassed my goal of 10 and ended with a list of 28 books read.

When selecting books I followed two criteria:

  1. The rankings on GoodReads were above 3.5+
  2. My library had the eBook

Looking back on the list you can see a bias towards historical fiction and bildungsroman, a word I learned to mean books that follow a character through their formative years. With the stressful events of the year, these genres offered a nice retreat into a different world where I could see things from a new perspective.

With an unknown 2021 ahead, I’m still deciding what my goal will be but I’m excited to keep the momentum going. Let me know if there are any books you think I’d enjoy!

If you are wondering where to start, I’d recommend:

  1. The Girl with the Louding Voice (2020), Abi Dare
  2. The Fountains of Silence (2019), Ruta Sepetys
  3. The Huntress (2019), Kate Quinn
  4. The Making of a Manager (2019), Julie Zhuo
  5. This Tender Land (2019), William Kent Krueger

You can view the entire list on my Goodreads page.
